Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 48: Columbus deals Calgary their fourth loss on home ice in a row

The Calgary Flames already knew the fate of their six-game homestand could only be at best .500 having already lost three in a row in regulation. They had a good chance to aim for .500 with the Columbus Blue Jackets coming to town.

However, a truly bad day for the Flames was instead the theme in Calgary with a 5–2 defeat being the final outcome.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • The Flames were outshot by the Blue Jackets, which in isolation isn’t that bad, but in a game where you’d think the Flames would be more desperate… yeah, it’s that bad.
  • Moral wins in the faceoff dot though.

  • MacKenzie Weegar scored his third goal in as many games. His 12th goal of the season moves him into a tie for second place with Quinn Hughes for goals by a defenceman.
  • Connor Zary picked up his 10th goal of the season, becoming the sixth Flame to hit double-digit goals this year.

All situations Corsi

  • The first period was about as back and forth as it can get as both teams were entwined with shot attempts and also traded two goals apiece.
  • The Flames pulled away with shot attempts but were unable to score past the first period.
  • Calgary’s special teams didn’t fair too hot with a shorthanded goal and a power play goal against.
  • This is a strange shot plot as the Blue Jackets took a majority of their shots from one side of the ice. Not sure I’ve seen this before.
  • The Flames were almost entirely random in their shot attempts, taking shots from anywhere in the offensive zone with no real structure.

5v5 Corsi

  • The Flames were able to get more shot attempts at 5v5, but looking at the next chart, there’s a different story…
  • Both teams were allergic to taking high-danger shots. The sparseness in shots in the slot for both teams is almost alarming. I also can’t say I’ve seen a chart this bad for both teams involved in a long time.
