Flames Visual Recap 42: Sharangovich hat trick powers Calgary to victory as Backlund plays in historic night

The Calgary Flames scored six goals when Mikael Backlund tied Mark Giordano for second-most games played in franchise history, and they did it again on game later when Backlund passed Giordano. Yegor Sharangovich scored a hat trick for the Flames in glorious fashion as well.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • The Flames scoring six goals on thirty shots makes for a nifty 20% team shooting percentage. Pretty good, pretty good.
  • Calgary had a significant edge in blocked shots and faceoff wins as well.

  • Sharangovich’s hat trick was pretty special, to say the least. One goal at evens, one on the power play, one on the penalty kill. This man can do it all.
  • Blake Coleman also picked up three points.
  • Jonathan Huberdeau’s point streak now sits as six points in four games.

All situations Corsi

  • The two teams were neck and neck for most of the game in terms of shot attempts, but Calgary clearly had the scoring edge as the game-winning goal was scored less than eight minutes into the game and the four-goal first period just took the wind out out of Arizona’s sails.
  • The Flames really dialled it back in the third period. Including Sharangovich’s hat trick goal, Calgary only had two shot attempts in the final 13 minutes of the game.
  • The Flames were feasting from the one side of the ice. Backlund’s opening breakaway goal was the outlier as he shot from the goalie’s right side, the other five goals all came from the left.
  • Arizona actually looked pretty dangerous with their shot locations, but they weren’t really able to solve Jacob Markstrom, who continues to be stellar in net.

5v5 Corsi

  • The Flames were pretty pedestrian at 5v5 momentum but didn’t need to be anything more than that.
  • Arizona’s flurry at the end coming all at 5v5 was a sight to behold.
  • Looking at shot locations, the Flames got their four goals of course, but they didn’t really funnel shots into the high-danger areas. While I’ve been critical about them for this over the first half of their season, in this particular game they earned a bit of leeway.
