Dennis Gilbert injured on a dangerous slew foot by Predators’ Philip Tomasino

While the Calgary Flames picked up a big victory over the Nashville Predators, winning by a score of 6–3. However, it looks like they will be without the services of Dennis Gilbert for a while, who took a nasty slew foot with just a handful of minutes remaining in the game.

Gilbert takes a bad fall

Philip Tomasino caught Gilbert with his left leg, taking him out along the board. Gilbert went head-first into the ice and was immobilized briefly on the ice. The team’s trainers came out to attend to him and there was some thinking that the stretcher would need to be brought out, but Gilbert was able to sit up. Two teammates would carry him to the bench, where the medical staff attended to him. Take a look at the hit here:

For his part in the injury, Tomasino was assessed a match penalty for slew-footing and was ejected from the game. There is a very high chance he is either fined or suspended for this hit.

What happens now?

While the Flames did earn a valuable two points against a team they are chasing in the playoffs, they look to be without Gilbert for the time being. The Buffalo-born blueliner is likely out with a concussion for some time after a fall like that. Expect the Flames to have no official news on Gilbert in the immediate future, but seeing a fall like that combined with the extended time he wasn’t able to get up, a concussion is the most probably outcome here.

Expect a call-up for Ilya Solovyov or Mark Pysyk from the Calgary Wranglers until either Gilbert is back or Oliver Kylington’s conditioning stint with the Calgary Wranglers is complete.

Wishing Gilbert a speedy recovery!
