Sam Honzek and Slovakia eliminated from 2024 World Juniors

The Calgary Flames no longer have their sole 2024 World Junior Championship prospect playing in the tournament. Sam Honzek and Team Slovakia were eliminated from medal contention in their quarterfinal tilt against Team Finland.

It was a nail-biter with no shortage of drama as Finland scored the go-ahead goal with just over 90 seconds remaining in the game, only for Slovakia to respond with 44 seconds left. Needing overtime to settle, Finland took the win just 24 seconds into the extra frame.

Honzek’s overall performance

Honzek was named an alternate captain for the team, and he definitely took those responsibilities and elevated his game. Despite not being in the tournament’s leading scorer race, Honzek posted some important goals in his appearances in the early games. However, his play cooled off and he finished with three goals and one assist over five games played. For context on the scoring, two Slovak teammates in Servac Petrovsky and Filip Mesar lead the tournament with nine points apiece.

The tournament actually started with three goals in three games for Honzek, with two game-winning goals in the first two games. Those two games were a part of Slovakia’s three wins to open the tournament as they ended up falling 10–2 and 4–3 (OT) against the United States and Finland, respectively, in their latest two games.

Back to reality

Honzek will return to the WHL with the Vancouver Giants, where he has posted three goals and four assists across five games since his return from injury. His World Juniors experience was a strong stepping stone for him in his development as he showed some offensive flair and leadership. He can take this back with him as he grows into an even better captain for the Giants.
