The Calgary Flames fell to the Minnesota Wild in a shootout last night, earning a well-deserved point. However, this was the fourth game of the season that has ended in a shootout, and the Flames have lost each and every one of them. One reason for this is that everyone on the team not named Yegor Sharangovich has combined to score exactly zero shootout goals all year.
Yegor “Shootout Specialist” Sharangovich
It’s true. Sharangovich has participated in all four shootouts for the Flames this season, and has scored on three of them. His four shootout goals attempts rank first on the team, his three goals ranks first on the team, and everyone else is tied for second with zero.
Here’s how the Flames skaters have done in the shootout so far this season:
Player | Shootout Attempts | Shootout Goals |
---|---|---|
Yegor Sharangovich | 4 | 3 |
Jonathan Huberdeau | 4 | 0 |
Nazem Kadri | 3 | 0 |
Connor Zary | 2 | 0 |
Dillon Dube | 1 | 0 |
Rasmus Andersson | 1 | 0 |
Elias Lindholm | 1 | 0 |
This is not overly surprising as Sharangovich has been a shootout specialist his entire career thus far.
Including his time with the New Jersey Devils, Sharangovich has made nine shootout attempts and has scored six times.
Flames history in the shootout
All time, the Flames’ leading shootout scorer is Sean Monahan who had 18 goals on 46 attempts as a member of the Flames. Percentage wise, Paul Byron and Derek Ryan both scored on their only shootout attempt as Flames for a 100% conversion rate.
Sharangovich’s 75% conversion rate ranks first in Calgary Flames history among all players with more than just one shootout attempt though, and his three goals ranks 14th all-time and second among active Flames skaters.

Sharangovich is becoming a very important player
In addition to being one of the team’s best penalty killers, Sharangovich is proving his worth in a big way on the offensive side of the ice. His 10 goals paces the team, and he is proving those critical of the trade that sent Tyler Toffoli to the Devils in exchange for Sharangovich wrong.
The cherry on top: Sharangovich has score 13 times this season if you include shootout goals. Toffoli has only scored 12.
