The theme of the year is simple. Everything the Calgary Flames do, they should do it for Dustin Wolf. This mantra includes their latest game against the Carolina Hurricanes where the team scored three goals in the third period to come back and earn Wolf his first win of the season.
Looking at the charts, there are a few interesting things of note. First, the Hurricanes played a game last night but the Flames didn’t start with much enthusiasm. Carolina scored twice early in the first period while two straight Calgary power plays did absolutely nothing for the Flames. If anything it gave the Hurricanes more momentum.
In the third period, the Flames actually pushed and opened the period with a good burst, pulling even with the Hurricanes in shot attempts en route to scoring three straight goals.
In the shot location chart, a huge change in the way the Flames have played compared to the start of the season was seen: The Flames got shots off in high-danger areas—lots of them. While it took the Flames a long time to establish momentum, on aggregate throughout the game they were more selective with their shots and weren’t wasting opportunities with low-percentage shots. This is a good thing for the team as a whole.
They didn’t make it easy but they definitely made it fun. Check out all the charts below!
