Dustin Wolf backstops the Calgary Flames to yet another third period comeback

It was another night where the Calgary Flames fell behind early, and after a very boring first two periods, they were able to get going in the third to score three unanswered goals and take the win. The big story of the game although was Dustin Wolf, he stood tall after giving up two goals early and gave the Flames the chance they needed to win the game.

The kids continue to shine for the Flames

The rookies of this year’s Calgary Flames continue to show their worth. It was a night where the rookies were a key factor in picking up the win and they continue to prove that the youth movement is what the Flames should be leaning towards moving forward.

Connor Zary was impactful once again. He scored the goal that tied the game in the third period and he was all over it making things happen all over the ice. He had a few games over the past little bit where it looked like maybe he was starting to slow down, but now with two goals in as many games, he is showing that he is very much not slowing down.

Wolf was the factor of the game tonight. After letting in two goals in the first period—neither of which were his fault by any means—he was able to put both of them in the rearview mirror and would blank the Hurricanes the rest of the way. He was calm, cool, and collected in the net all night. Many goalies may have let those two early ones get to their head, but not for the reigning AHL MVP.

The net belongs to Wolf until Jacob Markstrom comes back from injury, and tonight he proved why every Flames fan is excited to see him the crease moving forward. There is a big reason as to why he is looked at as arguably the best goaltending prospect in all of hockey. Without him tonight, the Flames don’t win this game. The game plan is simple: continue to give him the net.

The Flames’ third period magic continues

Whether you think it is a good way to win hockey games or not, you cannot argue with the fact that the Flames have been able to make most of the games they have played in this year exciting to the very end. They fell behind early, the play was sloppy and uninspired again, but they made everyone forget about it in the third when they roared back to win the game.

Blake Coleman was everywhere tonight, he had the primary helper on the first goal by Rasmus Andersson, and he scored the game-winning goal on a beautiful shorthanded rush where he picked the glove side on Pytor Kochetkov. He has been arguably the Flames’ most consistent player this season, and it was nice to see him get rewarded for his play.

Calgary Flames hockey has been quite the experience over the past few years, and this year is no different. Yes, the team has to start better from the word go to begin hockey games, and if they played every period as they do in most third periods, their record would probably be much better. Alas, this is what we are being handed, and I can at least say, it has been fun, so let’s hope that continues moving forward.

Another big test awaits for Calgary

The Flames will wrap up their homestand on Saturday when they host Tyler Toffoli and the New Jersey Devils. It will once again be a big test for this Flames group that is still trying to figure out their identity. I imagine we will see Wolf between the pipes once again, and he will have to be strong as he will face off against Jack Hughes and company. Let’s just all hope the Flames start this game on time, but continue to bring the fun.
