Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 24: Calgary comes up short in comeback attempt, Zadorov wins his first with the Canucks

The Calgary Flames took to the ice on their Indigenous Celebration game, facing off against the Vancouver Canucks. Of note, Nikita Zadorov‘s first game after being traded would be against his former team.

The organization did a fantastic job with the Indigenous pre-game, in-game, and, intermission events and ceremonies, highlighted by an O Canada rendition in the Blackfoot language by Dilayna Blackhorse.

As the game got going, things turned south for the Flames as they were down by one goal after the Canucks’ first shot. Before the midway mark of the first period, the home team was already trailing by two goals. Not a great start for Calgary, but they got themselves back into the game coming off a rare power play goal. The goal came off of an incredible keep-in by Connor Zary, who couldn’t be credited with an assist unless tertiary assists became a thing, but his tenacity at the blueline kept the play alive for Calgary and directly led to the goal from Mikael Backlund.

The second period was uneventful in the goal front, but the Canucks restored their two-goal lead with seconds to go in the middle frame, setting the Flames up for another big comeback attempt in the third period. The Flames have been winning games coming off of comebacks as of late, and this game would present another test.

The Flames tried to get things back in their favour, and finally pulled within one late in the third period with a great show of patience from Elias Lindholm after receiving a wicked pass from Yegor Sharangovich. However, with the net empty, Zadorov cleared the puck towards the empty net. While the goal was initially credited to Zadorov, it’s since been changed to Elias Pettersson.

Calgary didn’t give up though, as Lindholm scored again, this time on the power play. Unfortunately, it was too little too late as the Canucks and Zadorov held on.

Charts from the setback are below.
