Calgary Flames prospect Samuel Honzek named Giants captain, returns to play, named to Slovakia’s preliminary 2024 WJC roster

What a week it has been for Calgary Flames 2023 first-round draft pick Samuel Honzek. After being injured to open the season, he finally made his season debut while also being named captain of the Vancouver Giants. Now, just hours after his return, he’s been named to Slovakia’s preliminary roster for the 2024 World Junior Championship.

Honzek named captain, Lipinski named alternate

The Vancouver Giants named their leadership group which was highlighted by Honzek being named captain. On top of that, another 2023 draft pick was named to the leadership group as well. Jaden Lipinski, the Flames’ fourth-round pick joins the leadership fray. In an impressive show of faith for the Flames’ duo, the Giants said Lipinski will wear the captain’s patch if/when Honzek participates in the WJC.

Honzek on Slovakia’s roster

The roster consists of 10 drafted players and 17 nondrafted players. Honzek comes in with the potential of being one of the best players on that team. With his return to action happening mere weeks before the tournament, how he gets acclimated back onto the ice will influence how big of an impact he can have, both with the Giants for the balance of the season, and with Team Slovakia for the winter tournament.

Playing in six games in the previous two WJC U20 tournaments, Honzek didn’t put up any points. However, his big step forward in his first year in the WHL last season was instrumental for him. His development led to him being selected 16th overall by the Flames, and also signing his entry-level contract with the club.

A big week for Honzek

What a way to cap off a massive week for Honzek. Being named captain, returning to play, and now named to the WJC roster, all in the matter of a few short hours. Congratulations, Honzek!
