In a tough bout against the Nashville Predators, the Calgary Flames ended up heading into American Thanksgiving a 4–2 defeat, halting their four-game point streak. Despite a strong effort from Jacob Markstrom, the Flames were not the better team on the ice—especially as the game wore on.
The Flames struggled on the power play, failing to convert four opportunities in the game and extending their power play goal drought to only one in their last eight games. While Noah Hanifin and Yegor Sharangovich managed to find the net for the Flames, the team couldn’t fully capitalize on their chances. Hanifin’s goal was a great answer to the opening goal, but Sharangovich’s came too late for any chance of a comeback, as nice as it was.
The two teams continued their heated rivalry as two different fights broke out in the game. First Dennis Gilbert against Michael McCarron, then
Nikita Zadorov against Jeremy Lauzon. A total of 20 and 18 PIM were racked up for the Flames and Predators in the game, respectively.
A pivotal moment came during the Predators’ third goal, where a seemingly gloved puck was unchallengeable and was instead challenged for a hand pass instead. It didn’t turn out for the Flames as they ended up with an extra penalty on top of the two-goal deficit.
In the setback, a key takeaway is that the Flames need to improve their power play efficiency. They are momentum breakers for the Flames right now and it’s going to cost them more and more games down this upcoming stretch of strong opponents.
Charts from the setback are below.
