Calgary Flames emerged victorious in a nail-biting contest against the Buffalo Sabres in a back-and-forth affair. Four separate one-goal leads were held by the Flames, and the fourth held up for the win.
The Flames opened the game with a quick goal by Jonathan Huberdeau just 49 seconds into the match. Despite the early goal, the Flames weren’t able to duplicate their first period dominance they displayed against the Washington Capitals. Instead, the first period ended with a 2–2 tie. Erik Johnson tied the game up, Walker Duehr restored the Flames’ lead, and Tage Thompson brought it back to a deadlock after scoring on the power play to mark the first time the Flames’ penalty kill was beaten so far this year.
The game remained knotted at two apiece through two periods, but in the third, the Flame got their third lead of the game, only to see it tied up again less than two minutes later. Finally, Adam Ruzicka was the difference-maker with a go-ahead goal at 4:35, and 4–3 would be the final score. All four lines scored for the Flames, making a strong team effort with some added poetry on the ice.
Yes, line does rhyme with line, which also rhymes with line, which—you guessed it—rhymes with line. Poetry.
Dan Vladar, making his season debut, made 24 saves and was solid enough for the win. He was initially slotted to face Washington but was under the weather. It’s early still but the Flames may be looking to load manage Jacob Markstrom better this year. The Sabres—currently carrying three goalies on their roster—went with Devon Levi, who faced 36 shots.
The Flames now stand at 2–1–1 to start their season. Charts from the victory are below!
