Erik Karlsson’s Move to the Pittsburgh Penguins – How Will He Fair?

The NHL offseason is always an exciting time. While no games are played, it’s when teams can regroup, rethink tactics and strategies and, more importantly, trade players to strengthen and address weaknesses.

Few trades have received as much attention as Erik Karlsson’s move to the Pittsburgh Penguins, certainly affecting the Penguin’s NHL odds for the upcoming season. Let’s take a look at the move in more detail and discuss how Karlsson might fare with his new team.

A Look at Karlsson’s Career

Swedish-born Karlsson began his hockey career in his home country, where he played for Frolunda HC. He was quickly scouted by teams across the Atlantic and was picked by the Ottawa Senators in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

He rose through the ranks with his new team, quickly becoming a fan favourite. In June 2012, Karlsson penned a seven-year deal with the Senators, reported to be valued at over $45 million. The very next day he was awarded the James Norris Trophy, an NHL accolade given to the league’s best defensive player. He was just the second Swedish player to receive the award and just the third in the history of the NHL to receive it under the age of 23.

For the next six years, Karlsson established himself as one of the Senator’s most important players. He was a rock at the back and, other than a brief spell on the sidelines after a tendon injury, could always be relied upon.

Move to San Jose Sharks

After a long and successful stint with the Senators, Karlsson joined the San Jose Sharks in 2018.

Karlsson hit the ground running with the Sharks, becoming just the fifth defensive player ever to assist in 14 consecutive games. Despite a temporary spell out for a groin injury, the Sharks offered Karlsson a $92 million contract that would keep him with the team for another eight years. This deal made Karlsson the highest-paid defender in the history of the NHL and the league’s third-most well-paid player.

The Shark’s decision to offer Karlsson proved to be a shrewd one, as he continued to perform for the team and won a slew of awards and accolades. This year, he finished the season with 101 points, becoming only the fifth-ever defensive player to break the 100-point barrier in a single season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Trade

Despite flying for the Sharks, Karlsson joined the Pittsburgh Penguins on a three-term contract last month.

What can Penguins fans expect from the Swede? They’ve certainly got one of the best defensive players in modern NHL history, one that has smashed records wherever he has been. However, at 33 years old, Karlsson is past his prime. While he may still have the razor-sharp game intelligence and defensive prowess, his body will not have the speed and reactions that it used to.

Regardless, Karlsson will perform for the Penguins. His commitment, tenacity and passion have never been in doubt. He’s the kind of player to suit any situation. He’ll drive the team forward when their backs are to the wall, and he’ll go for the throat when it’s time to dominate a lesser opponent.

Conclusion

Erik Karlsson is one of the most decorated and celebrated players in the NHL. Wherever he has been, be it the Ottawa Senators or the San Jose Sharks, he’s won over the fans with his passion, commitment and playing ability. With his move to the Pittsburgh Penguins coming towards the twilight of his career, many have doubts about how much Karlsson has left in the tank. However, one thing is for sure, he’ll give the team everything he’s got.
