Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 50: Vladar sets franchise record as Calgary takes down Kraken in divisional tilt

The Calgary Flames were looking to get back into the win column in their last game before the NHL All-Star Game. After a putrid display of hockey against the Chicago Blackhawks on home ice, the Flames had to pack their bags and get to the West Coast to face the Seattle Kraken for the second half of their back-to-back.

With the Kraken having a historic bounceback season after a disappointing inaugural entry into the NHL, the Flames had a tough task ahead of them. Things immediately started off poorly for Calgary as Seattle got the early lead. However, the Flames responded in less than two minutes to tie the game up. They then added two more goals before the end of the first period—their third goal of the game was scored with just five seconds remaining in the frame.

The first period outburst was huge for Calgary as they were not chasing the game, which was all the more critical having played the night before. In fact, the Flames came into the second period with even more pressure and didn’t take their foot off the gas at all.

Heading into the third, the game was still 3–1, but the Kraken started to establish momentum after a string of consecutive penalties against the Flames across the two periods. Seattle scored on the power play but had it called back for goalie interference, but then quickly scored again to make it a one-goal game.

The Flames were able to respond nearly instantly to restore their two-goal lead and added an empty-netter for insurance. Make that 13 straight games that Dan Vladar has picked up a point for his team, tying him with Mike Vernon and Brian Elliott for the franchise record of consecutive games without a regulation loss.
