Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 48: Gaudreau’s return to the Saddledome spoiled as Calgary wins it in overtime

Finally, on the Calgary Flames’ 48th game of the season and their 24th game at the Saddledome, Johnny Gaudreau returned for his first game back as a Columbus Blue Jacket. The atmosphere was unlike no other as the crowd was ready to jeer and to cheer, but by the time the puck dropped, the Flames had the task of taking down the 32nd place team in the league while trying to spoil Gaudreau’s return.

Things got off to an intense start as Gaudreau was loudly booed at every opportunity. He was awarded with a penalty shot just five minutes into the game and the boos couldn’t have been louder. He missed. The crowd cheered.

Calgary then went up by one with a late goal in the period after a dominant display. They doubled their lead early in the second period and things were looking good. However, midway through the game, the Blue Jackets converted on two straight power plays just 49 seconds apart to tie the game up.

That’s the 32nd ranked power play in the league doing damage against the fifth ranked penalty kill, by the way. Two primary assists for Gaudreau might have been the reason on its success.

The Flames responded late in the period to restore their lead, but the Blue Jackets wouldn’t go away as they tied it up again early in the third. The game required overtime and in many ways the Flames felt like they were playing with tighter grips while the Blue Jackets had nothing to lose.

Thankfully, a Gaudreau turnover led to a two-on-one and the Flames picked up the win on their 49th shot of the game. A big two points in a game that had little business being as difficult as it turned out to be.

See you next time, Johnny.
