Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 26: Calgary overcomes early deficit to earn clutch win against Minnesota

Entering this game against the Minnesota Wild, The Calgary Flames aimed to win their third straight game for just the second time all season. The Flames had not had three consecutive victories since the first three games of the season, and with the opportunity to close out their home stand with a 4–1–0 record, this was a big game. Dan Vladar started in goal once again.

It wasn’t the start they wanted by any means. The Wild opened up a quick two goal lead just over two minutes into the game off goals from Kirill Kaprizov and Mason Shaw. The Flames woke up but couldn’t beat Marc-Andre Fleury in the opening frame.

In the second period, everything changed. The Flames roared back with three goals in just over three minutes, Nazem Kadri, Blake Coleman, and Tyler Toffoli tallying goals for the Flames. Things were looking good all the way until the last five minutes of the third period.

With just over four minutes remaining in regulation, the Wild tied the game off a John Merrill shot that took an unfortunate deflection off Chris Tanev in front. Fortunately for the Flames, they answered back just 12 seconds later off a nice Rasmus Andersson net-front drive that beat Fleury on a backhand over the pad. Toffoli capped off the win with an empty-netter. The final score was 5–3.

The Flames are steadily putting together much better efforts, and are inching closer to a top-three spot in the Pacific division. They’ll now head out on the road for a back-to-back this weekend.
