The Calgary Flames have a lot of business left to complete this offseason, and some of it is much more urgent now with the departure of Johnny Gaudreau. Looming on Brad Treliving’s calendar are completing new contracts for three pending restricted free agents that have filed for arbitration this season: Andrew Mangiapane, Oliver Kylington, and Matthew Phillips.
Two other RFAs with arbitration rights chose not to file for arbitration: Matthew Tkachuk and Eetu Tuulola. Tkachuk likely wanted to ensure he retained his option to accept his qualifying offer, and Tuulola has signed with Ilves in the Liiga for next season; there wasn’t really a point in filing for arbitration since he won’t be playing in North American anyway.
Adam Ruzicka and Martin Pospisil are also RFAs, but do not have arbitration rights.
July 17, 2022 was the deadline for players with arbitration rights to file for salary arbitration. Mangiapane, Kylington, and Phillips will have hearings scheduled sometime between July 27, 2022 and August 11, 2022.
Arbitration is designed to get the team and player to the negotiating table much faster, and decide on a fair contract based on the arguments presented by both parties. However, Brad Treliving only ever had one arbitration filing actually make it to the hearing and have a verdict announced, Brett Kulak back in 2018.
