Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 49: Flames show killer instinct to win their 10th straight game

The Calgary Flames hosted the Winnipeg Jets in a Family Day matinee, looking to tie a franchise record and win their 10th straight game. Jacob Markstrom got the start in goal against Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets.

Game recap

Afternoon games have seemed to get away from the Flames in recent years, but this game was tight checking for the full 60 minutes. Both teams clogged up the neutral zone and gave up very few quality chances.

The first period was scoreless and extremely close. Five penalties were called and the Flames had a brief 5-on-3 to finish the first and owned the lion’s share of shots and chances, but couldn’t convert on any of them.

The second period had more action. Just over a minute into the second frame, the Flames opened the scoring on the power play. Sean Monahan snapped home his eighth goal of the year and first since January 24th. Fortunately for the Jets, Dominic Toninato tipped home the tying goal midway through the period, and it was tied again heading into the third period.

Elias Lindholm also scored, but the goal was disallowed on a coach’s challenge for offside.

The third period was just like the previous two, except that the Jets stepped on the gas. They were dominating possession and chances basically the entire period, but Markstrom shut the door the whole way. In the final minute, Lindholm got his goal back, tipping in the go-ahead marker with just 47 seconds left on the clock. There was a coach’s challenge initiated again on this goal, this time for goaltender interference, but the goal stood and the FLames had the lead.

Tyler Toffoli added an empty netter to seal the deal shortly afterwards and the Flames had their 10th straight win. Lindholm’s goal extended his goal scoring streak to eight games which ties a franchise record. The Flames will look to set a new franchise record on Thursday when they face the Vancouver Canucks.
