Flames Sunday Census: The burning question on whether Calgary will make the playoffs

Just a few games ago, the Calgary Flames looked like a team that was surely out of the playoff race. Now, stringing together a three-game win streak off of their first win when trailing after two periods for the first time this season, it suddenly seems possible that they might just pull off the highly improbable.

Now with the Flames very much out of the draft lottery picture, fans on Team Tank have either quieted down or have pulled the full 180° and are fully onboard Team Go For It. In fact, if you really think about it, making the playoffs is the only outcome that’s any good for the Flames at this point.

With that said, can the Flames pull it off and make it to the postseason dance? We asked, you answered.

It’s now or never for Calgary

The Flames have the most momentum they’ve had since the earlier parts of the season. They’re legitimately on their first three-game win streak of the 2023 calendar year, and have a good opportunity to extend that to their first four-game win streak of the season. It’s astonishing that they haven’t done so at all yet this season, but the results in the past are frankly unimportant.

What matters now are the six games left. With the way the NHL schedule worked out for Calgary, the Winnipeg Jets, and the Nashville Predators, the Flames managed to get the easiest schedule. Their must-win games as a result are against teams that are teams they should win against, while the Jets and Predators don’t have it as easy.

There’s a clear path for the Flames to make the playoffs, and right now, the fan base thinks so to.

A look at the votes

Since this week’s poll offered just two options of the Flames either making the playoffs or missing, it was a pure gut-check poll to gather what people think and feel about the team. Nearly two-thirds of the votes have the Flames making it, where there’s a mix of optimism for the Flames’ April fortune. The other third don’t have as much faith, or are at least a bit more cynical on how the Flames will end up faring in their final games.

We need to keep the dub train rolling we honestly should win the remaining games here

Calgary can do this

Overall, there’s a shared sense among the fan base that the Flames can do this. It does come down to the final games where all three teams face one another and it’ll make for one of the most exciting finishes to a Flames regular season in recent memory.

All three teams know their situations and the atmosphere in the games they have against one another will be electric and well into a playoffs mood. If the Flames can pick up a couple more wins prior to these head-to-head matchups, then the postseason will be that much more attainable.
