Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 30: Tough start ends with shootout loss to Canucks

The Calgary Flames looked to snap a three-game losing skid as they returned home to host the Vancouver Canucks. It was the last time the Flames would wear their new black pedestal reverse retro jerseys. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is up to you.

Jacob Markstrom started in net for the Flames, and despite a tough go this season, has really started to play well the last few games. Spencer Martin tended the pipes for the Canucks.

Unfortunately, it was a horrific start for Markstrom and the Flames. The Canucks potted two quick tallies in the first two minutes of the game. Bo Horvat opened the scoring and Conor Garland doubled the Cancucks’ lead just moments later. The Flames battled back and tied things up off goals from Mikael Backlund and Andrew Mangiapane, managing to escape the first period with a 2–2 tie.

Trevor Lewis gave the Flames their first lead of the game early in the second period, but under two minutes later, Sheldon Dries tied the game up at three goals apiece. The Flames pressured the Canucks for most of the game, with shot attempts 63–50 and shots on goal 36–22 after regulation.

The Flames didn’t take a penalty in overtime, but the Canucks ran the show in the extra period. Markstrom stood on his head to send the game to shootout. Without him, the Canucks could have ended things several times in overtime.

That’s where the Flames’ luck would run out, however. They were not able to score a single goal in the shootout, and Andrei Kuzmenko’s lone goal sealed the deal for the Canucks. The Flames are now on a four-game losing streak, with their next chance to get back into the win column coming on Friday night against the St. Louis Blues.
