Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 29: Markstrom solid in net as Flames couldn’t offer goal support

The Calgary Flames have not had a very successful road trip so far. With just one point through their first two games on the trip, the Flames looked to come back home with a win in their pockets as they faced the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.

Calgary acutally headed into the game a bit shorthanded as both Elias Lindholm and MacKenzie Weegar were unavailable due to injury and illness. On the other side, the Montreal Canadiens were also ravaged as the two less-than-optimal lineups faced off.

On the injury front, things went from bad to worse as Cole Caufield exited the game after a hard collision, and Chris Tanev was hit on his head by a shot that left him dazed on the ice and ending his night too. Nazem Kadri was also taken out of the game on an awkward hit that required concussion protocol, but he returned.

As for the scoreboard, the two teams showed off their penalty kills as neither team could stay out of the box. On 13 total power play opportunities throughout the game, the Flames scored their first and only goal late in the second—more on the penalties in a bit.

Determined to even things up, the Canadiens came out swinging in the third period. From puck drop, they dominated play and kept creating chances until they broke through with a tally. Neither team could score in regulation and for the second game in a row the Flames went to overtime.

Just 49 seconds in, the Flames were assessed a double minor for high-sticking, and were tasked with killing off four minutes over the abbreviated period. That’d be two straight games where an overtime penalty virtually obliterated the Flames chances of winning the game whatsoever. Fortunately their penalty kill was up to the task. They were successful as Jacob Markstrom made key saves and the penalty killers made key plays to keep the puck out of the net.

The game required shootout, where they ultimately lost.

In a game that clearly gave Markstrom his mojo back, the Flames left him out to dry as they couldn’t solve Jake Allen for the second straight time this season.
