Flames Fan Survey: Crowdsourcing the Calgary Flames’ next captains

The Calgary Flames are about to enter a new era. The franchise is set to unveil a new lineup like no one could have possibly imagined. While there’s still more the team can do to bolster the roster, the other pressing topic is whether the Flames will play with a captain in 2022–23.

Using social surveys to select the captain

There are strong favourites for the Flames captaincy already, and there’s really no bad answer. However, with all the turnover that the roster has seen, we wanted to get the full breakdown of who Flames fans believe should be the captain. A generic poll gives limited options, but an interactive crowdsourced survey? What more can you ask for.

To see who fans think should be the captain, we’ll use an AllOurIdeas poll, where a pairwise wiki survey will continuously enable voters to select the better of two options. So as you enter the survey, you’ll be able to keep picking who would be the more ideal captain between two randomly selected Flames players.

Finding the favourite

As you and many others start completing the survey, a distribution will start to form and the clear favourites—and definite longshots, too—will come to light.

Not only will this type of survey reveal who should be wearing the captain’s patch come October, but thanks to the format, it’ll also show who should end up being alternates too. What will make it interesting is when you get tougher comparisons. Think along the lines of Mikael Backlund versus Chris Tanev, Jonathan Huberdeau versus Nazem Kadri, or Andrew Mangiapane versus Blake Coleman. Who will come out on top then?

Realistically, there’s no shortage of leadership on this Flames’ squad. The hope is using this survey will force fans to think a whole lot harder about who they want to lead the Flames this season.

So without further ado, enter the survey and spend a few minutes participating in selecting this year’s Flames captain and alternates!
