NHL Fantasy: Week 24 goalie streaming options

Whether you’re getting ready for the second round of your fantasy hockey playoffs, or just getting started this week in round one, the best and most exciting time of the year for fantasy managers is certainly here. For those teams still in contention for your fantasy crown, the decisions you make to your roster are now more important than ever.

Goaltending can be one of the toughest positions to cover in fantasy hockey, as well all know goalies are voodoo. That said, streaming goalies is almost always a great way to gain some extra value in the position. With packed NHL schedules filled with back-to-backs, it opens the door to a ton of opportunities for fantasy managers looking to get some extra starts throughout the week.

Let’s take a look at some great streaming options in net for the coming week in fantasy.

Casey DeSmith – G – Pittsburgh Penguins

Back-to-back: April 9 vs. WSH, April 10 vs. NSH

One of the main factors for the Penguins great year has been the strong play of starter Tristan Jarry. Jarry has had a huge workload this season, sitting with 53 games played which is tied for fourth in the NHL.

For fantasy managers, that means they should be looking to Casey DeSmith to get a guaranteed start this coming week. The Penguins will be looking to rest Jarry whenever they can and with a home back-to-back coming up DeSmith should get into a game barring something crazy.

DeSmith hasn’t been great this season as he sits with an average .905 save percentage and 2.95 GAA. He does however have a 7–4–4 record and has won four of his last five appearances dating back to February 10. At 7% rostered, he’s a great streaming option in net playing behind a top team.

Antti Raanta – G – Carolina Hurricanes

Back-to-back: April 7 vs. BUF, April 8 vs. NYI

Antti Raanta’s situation is very similar DeSmith, although he’s played a bit more this season. He plays for one of the league’s best teams behind one of the league’s top goalies from this season. Frederick Andersen has played 46 games this season as the Hurricanes go-to starter.

Raanta meanwhile has played 21 games and posted a very nice 11–4–4 record, 2.39 GAA and .917 save percentage. Raanta is without question one of the best backup goalies in the league, and with the Hurricanes set for a home back-to-back against two easy opponents in the Sabres and Islanders he’ll have a great shot to pick up a win next week.

Still at just 25% owned in Yahoo! leagues, Raanta is about as good as it gets when it comes to goalie streams next week as he should be set for a nearly guaranteed win.

Scott Wedgewood – G – Dallas Stars

Back-to-back: April 9 vs. NJ, April 10 @CHI

Scott Wedgewood is now on his third team this season, which isn’t typically a sign of a goalie with value in fantasy. The good news is he’s finally found himself on one that isn’t terrible. After spending time with the New Jersey Devils and Arizona Coyotes, Wedgewood was traded to the Dallas Stars with Braden Holtby and Anton Khudobin both injured.

Since coming to the Stars, Wedgewood has played one game, getting an impressive 44-save win against the Hurricanes. Before that, he had posted a save percentage of at least .910 in seven of his previous 10 games for the Coyotes.

With Holtby and Khudobin still out and the Stars having a back-to-back against the dreadful Devils and Blackhawks, Wedgewood has a great shot at picking up another win for the Stars next week. He’s just 6% owned in Yahoo! leagues.

Erik Kallgren – G – Toronto Maple Leafs

Back-to-back: April 4 @TBL, April 5 @FLA

Erik Kallgren was on right about zero people’s radar this season in fantasy until being recalled to the NHL in March. Now he’s getting starts for the one of the best teams in the NHL. Life comes at you fast.

Since being recalled, Kallgren has posted a respectable 4–2–1 record along with a .906 save percentage and 2.71 GAA. Kallgren’s numbers aren’t great, but behind an elite team he always has a good chance at getting a win. With Petr Mrazek now out for the remainder of the regular season and Jack Campbell just working his way back from an injury, Kallgren is locked in to a role on the Maple Leafs.

The Leafs have the dreaded road trip back-to-back in Florida, but they match up well with anyone and always have a chance at winning and Kallgren will certainly get into one of the two games. He’s sitting higher than the other options at 27% owned in Yahoo! currently, but should still be available in most league’s.
