Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 16: Nothing going right for the Flames other than their jerseys

The Flames returned to the Saddledome donning their Blasty jerseys to close out their four-game series against the Canucks. Heading into the series, the Canucks were reeling and there was a sense that the Flames could use the opportunity to propel themselves into the top of the division. Spoiler alert: That didn’t happen.

The Canucks got off to an early lead as Jordie Benn capitalised on a turnover from Dominik Simon. To be fair, it wasn’t the Flames’ worst first period by any means, but it’s still disheartening hockey to continuously open games so poorly.

In the second, Bo Horvat extended the Canucks’ lead after Jacob Markstrom went way out of his net to challenge Horvat. One deke later and Horvat had a wide open net to score on. The Flames pressed back throughout the period, score effects and all. With under two minutes remaining in the period, Andrew Mangiapane turned on his nitro and scored on a beauty of goal on a solo effort to cut the lead in half.

However, the Canucks added two more goals from J.T. Miller and Nate Schmidt 37 seconds apart to close out the second with a 4-1 lead. With the odds against them, the Flames did not even initiate a comeback. Brock Boeser added a goal a little less than six minutes into the final frame making it 5-1. The Flames couldn’t buy a goal and that’s not for a lack of trying.

Calgary closes out the series with a mediocre record of 2-2-0. Disappointing to say the least, but even worse, Vancouver walks away from the set with a 2-1-1 record, so they actually gained a point on the Flames after all was said and done. The Flames still have games in hand, but the tables have turned and it looks like Calgary’s the team that’s reeling now.

Below are all the data visualisations from the game, one better forgotten sooner rather than later:
