Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 12: Late power play goal boosts Flames to victory

The Calgary Flames and the Winnipeg Jets met again for the fourth time in eight days, and it’d be the Jets’ fourth straight game against the Flames to boot. The Flames were returning to action after an offensive outburst against the Oilers, whereas the Jets were looking to continue amassing points against Calgary, having picked up seven of eight possible points prior to this game.

The game was tied after twenty minutes of play, and both teams were fairly matched all things considered. The addition of Pierre-Luc Dubois wasn’t as big of a threat as anticipated, as his minutes were sparse in the first period.

Early in the second, the Jets broke the deadlock with a power play goal coming from Nikolaj Ehlers. The Flames quickly responded as Andrew Mangiapane was able to find a loose puck in the crease to put it past Connor Hellebuyck to tie up the game at one apiece.

With less than seven minutes remaining, Byron Froese scored his first goal as a Flame and his first NHL goal since December 22, 2017. Coming full circle, that goal was against Calgary back when Froese was with the Montreal Canadiens.

Just a little over two minutes later, the Jets answered back with Ehlers potting his second goal of the game. Onwards from there and much through the majority of the third period, the game was boringly back and forth, with no team able to really gain any momentum in their favour.

With just over two minutes left, Johnny Gaudreau was high-sticked by Nathan Beaulieu. On the ensuing power play, the Flames capitalised as Elias Lindholm scored the game winner. The Flames win two in a row in regulation for the first time since they faced off against the Vancouver Canucks in Games 2 and 3 of the season.
