Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 8: Back and forth game ends with a Calgary shootout victory courtesy of Gaudreau

The Calgary Flames headed to Winnipeg for their first tilt in a three-game set versus the Jets. The Jets will be playing this mini-series without Pierre-Luc Dubois due to quarantine, while the Flames currently have a healthy and full roster.

The game got off to an unfortunate start for Calgary, as Kyle Connor scored twice on the power play in the first period to put the Jets up early. Calgary managed just five shots in the period to Winnipeg’s eight.

In the second period right off the opening faceoff, Chris Tanev corralled the puck right behind the Flames’ blue line and took a bouncing shot that beat Connor Hellebuyck for a fortuitous goal. The Flames pressed in the second but weren’t able to tie up the game.

With 20 minutes to go, Calgary got to work and before midway through the third, the Flames tied the game with a nifty Juuso Valimaki pass to Johnny Gaudreau, in which the latter extended his point streak to eight games… with eight Flames games played in the season.

Andrew Mangiapane put the Flames up 3-2 after relentless pressure from the visitors. The Jets eventually pulled Hellebuyck and were able to tie the game with a tip-in from Mark Scheifele. The game was headed to overtime.

Overtime was high event but it ultimately solved nothing. In the shootout, Sean Monahan and Connor each scored with all others unsuccessful to send it to extra rounds. Going fourth for the Flames, Gaudreau won the game going five-hole on Hellebuyck.
