The Calgary Flames came into the Saturday night game with an urgency to change their momentum from the past three games, and they did exactly that. The Flames went on the power play early in the first and Johnny Gaudreau scored to extend his point streak to seven games.
While the first period had fairly even hockey from both teams, the Flames ultimately held onto their 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. The second period was a different story. It was all Montreal, who pushed back with a flurry but Jacob Markstrom was up to the task and helped the Flames maintain their lead.
In the third period, Montreal continued to press for the first half before Calgary finally pushed back. In 30 minutes of play from the start of the second until midway through the third, the Flames only had nine corsi events.
Unable to tie the game, the Canadiens pulled Jake Allen for the extra attacker, and Mikael Backlund was able to score on the empty net to seal the victory for the Flames. Markstrom picked up his second shut out of the season in his third win with the Flames.
