When Zac Rinaldo started skating with the Flames, he was asked how he was feeling about his PTO. He said he “lives for this sh*t”. Looks like it all worked out for him . The Calgary Flames have signed Rinaldo to a one-year two-way contract with a $700k AAV at the NHL level following a successful professional try-out.

Using the TWC Player Offensive Evaluation tool, let’s take a look at what this could potentially mean for the Flames’ offensive outputs. The tool uses 5v5 offensive data from the 2016-17 through to the 2018-19 seasons and compares a player to the rest of the league by using standard deviations.
To say Rinaldo had a rough couple of seasons would be an understatement. Posting below average possession stats, even worse scoring numbers, and even worse shot generation.
While he is a depth signing, not heavily relied upon to score, the Flames will hope that he can at least generate more chances and manage the puck a little better this season. He’ll likely start in the AHL anyway, so this is really just cheap gritty depth for the team.
Born and Raised in Mississauga, Ontario, Rinaldo was drafted in the sixth round by the Philadelphia Flyers. After spending parts of the first four seasons with the Flyers, he bounced from Boston to Arizona and then to Nashville before ending up in Calgary to start this preseason.
