Calgary Flames over/under prediction results

Game one is in the books, and already some pre-season bets are looking great while others are looking like early disasters. Prior to puck drop last night, TWC ran a voluntary questionnaire polling hockey fans about their predictions on the Calgary Flames this season.

The entries have been compiled and the results tabulated, and there are quite a few surprises among the list of questions asked. All totals are represented as percentages in both over and under categories.

The Overs

  • 90% of respondents believe the Flames will eclipse the 42 win mark (including 83% choosing the Flames to win the season series against the rival Oilers), indicating a strong expectation that the Flames will compete in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
  • Over 85% of respondents are confident that Johnny Gaudreau will be at least a point-per-game player, and Sean Monahan will set a career high with more than 33 goals.
  • Despite not cracking the opening night roster, 81% of respondents feel that Rasmus Andersson will play at least 17 games for the Flames this season. With in injury to Travis Hamonic on opening night, this could look like an easy win for those who took the over.

The Unders

  • 87% of respondents do not think Andrew Mangiapane will play 42 games for the team this year after losing the vacant opening night roster spot to Dillon Dube.
  • Coming off a rough 2017-18 campaign, 62% of respondents do not believe TJ Brodie will bounce back with at least 37 assists, despite being reunited with elite partner Mark Giordano.
  • They missed the playoffs last year but still had a season high winning streak of seven games. 61% of respondents do not believe the Flames will beat this streak this season.

The Split

  • The Flames went 0/7 on the powerplay on opening night against the Vancouver Canucks, and respondents were undecided on if the Flames could crack the top 13 in league powerplay ranks. 45% took the over.
  • Mark Jankowski scored an impressive 17 goals as a rookie last year, albeit with four in the final game against the Vegas Golden Knights. Having dropped down a line on the depth chart this year, 49% of respondents believe Jankowski will not hit the 15 goal mark in his sophomore season.
  • The number of games goaltender Mike Smith will play this year will depend on if he can stay healthy. Last year’s injury limited him to 55 games for the Flames, and just 52% of respondents think he will surpass that mark this season.

The Verdict

Overall, most respondents feel that the Flames will be a good team this year. The over was chosen for most of the Flames’ players scoring milestones, and for the team’s powerplay tanking and win total. Most are predicting a big year for the Flames; here’s hoping that comes to fruition.
